Notary for the Volusia County Branch Jail
Most notaries in this county won’t go. I will, and I’ve been doing it for years. $125 flat, because the wait is the part nobody can predict.
Why This is Hard to Get
Somebody in custody still has a life running on the outside. A house that has to be sold. A vehicle title that has to move. A child who needs a parental consent form signed. A power of attorney so a family member can act while they cannot. Every one of those needs a notary, in person.
As far as I know there’s one other notary in Volusia County who will go out there. People are scared of the place. I’m not. I walk in, I do the job properly, and I walk out.
What the $125 Actually Pays For
It isn’t the distance. The jail is about thirty five minutes from me whether I start in Daytona or out at DeLand. It’s the time I can’t plan around.
- I arrive and go through facility intake, which takes as long as it takes.
- I might be with your person in twenty minutes. I might be sitting for two and a half hours.
- I turn down other jobs while I’m out there, because I can’t give anybody else a time.
You aren’t paying for mileage. You’re paying for a block of my day that nobody can predict.
That’s why the rate doesn’t move with the distance. The jail is about thirty five minutes from me whether I start in Daytona or out at DeLand.
What to Have Ready Before You Call
- The document itself, already prepared. I notarize, I don’t draft.
- The full name of the person inside, exactly as it appears on their identification.
- Confirmation that the facility will allow the visit and that their photo identification on file is current and unexpired.
- Whether the document needs witnesses, which are $30 each.
Hospitals, Rehab and Care Facilities
The same applies to anywhere a person can’t leave. Halifax Health, AdventHealth, the rehab centers, assisted living and memory care, hospice. I’ve spent a great deal of time in hospital rooms and I know how to do this gently and without making a hard day worse.
What People Ask Before They Call
How much is a jail notarization?
$125 flat. It covers the trip and the wait, because I can’t predict which one I’m getting. Twenty minutes some days, two and a half hours others.
Can the inmate sign anything?
They need current, valid, unexpired photo identification on file, and the facility has to allow the visit. Call me before you drive anywhere and I’ll tell you what I need from your side.
Can you do a power of attorney for someone inside?
Yes, and it’s the most common thing I’m called for. Bring the document. I notarize what is put in front of me; I don’t write it.
Do you bring witnesses?
I can arrange witnesses for $30 each where the document requires them. Tell me when you call so I can bring the right people.
Someone Inside Needs a Document Signed?
Call and tell me what you have. I’ll tell you what the facility will need.
